Advocacy – Schools Library Service Case Study

Background

Schools Library Service is often asked by Heads and School Librarians where they can go to see examples of good school libraries.  SLS decided to initiate a “Libraries and Learning Trail” to highlight and showcase examples of good practice.  It also had the added benefit to participating schools to boost their morale and bring increased status to the library within their own school community.

Content

  • Produce a Brochure with a map showing school library locations around the authority.
  • Highlight the focus of each location
    E.g.
    Reading Clubs at School X
Information skills across the curriculum at school Y.
Pupil Library Assistant scheme at school Z.
  • Choose a week in October/November to promote.
  • Heads agree that schools can be visited.
  • SLS to co-ordinate and distribute brochures.
  • Investigate Media Coverage.

Outcomes

  • Focus Week for School Libraries
  • SLS seen to be promoting good practice.
  • Heads and Senior Management involvement.
